Do I Need to Be ‘Good at Yoga’ to Attend a Retreat?

It’s one of the most common questions - and one of the biggest reasons people hold back from booking:

“I’m not very flexible…”
“I’ve never really done yoga before…”
“I’m probably not good enough…”

Let’s gently clear this up.

You do not need to be “good at yoga” to attend a retreat.
In fact, there’s no such thing.

Yoga Isn’t About Performance

Somewhere along the way, yoga has been misunderstood as something you need to be good at - like a skill to master or a level to reach.

But yoga isn’t about how a pose looks.
It’s about how it feels.

It’s about:

  • Connecting with your breath

  • Becoming aware of your body

  • Learning to slow down and listen

None of those things require experience, flexibility, or perfection.

My Approach: Yin & Yang Yoga

At my retreats, the yoga practice is a 1.5-hour blend of Yin and Yang yoga, designed to support all levels - whether you’re completely new or more experienced.

Here’s what that looks like:

🌿 Yang (Flow-Based Movement)

This is the more dynamic part of the practice.

You’ll move through gentle sequences that:

  • Build strength and mobility

  • Help release physical tension

  • Bring energy into the body

You’re always encouraged to move at your own pace, with options and modifications throughout.

🌙 Yin (Longer-Held Poses)

This is where things slow down.

Poses are held for longer, allowing you to:

  • Soften into the body

  • Release deeply held tension

  • Calm the nervous system

There’s no rushing, no striving - just space to be.

It’s Not About Flexibility

You don’t need to touch your toes.
You don’t need to balance perfectly.
You don’t need to know the names of poses.

Flexibility isn’t a requirement - it’s something that gently develops over time (if it needs to).

What matters most is your willingness to show up exactly as you are.

You’ll Always Be Supported

During the retreat, you’re guided every step of the way.

You’ll be offered:

  • Clear, gentle instruction

  • Variations and options for different bodies

  • Encouragement to rest whenever you need

There is no pressure to keep up, push through, or do anything that doesn’t feel right for you.

Rest is always welcome.

And It’s So Much More Than Yoga

Even though yoga is at the heart of the retreat, it’s only one part of the experience.

You’ll also be supported through:

  • Meditation to calm the mind

  • Yoga nidra for deep, restorative rest

  • Reiki drumming meditations for emotional release

  • Sound baths to soothe the nervous system

  • Spiritual workshops for reflection and growth

So even if yoga feels new or unfamiliar, there are many different ways to connect and benefit.

What You Might Be Surprised By

Many people arrive feeling unsure about the yoga… and leave realising it was never about the poses at all.

It was about:

  • Taking time for themselves

  • Feeling more present in their body

  • Letting go of pressure and expectation

  • Experiencing a sense of calm they hadn’t felt in a while

And that’s something everyone can access.

A Different Kind of “Good”

If there is such a thing as being “good at yoga,” it might look more like this:

  • Listening to your body

  • Resting when you need to

  • Breathing deeply

  • Letting go of comparison

And those are things you don’t need to learn beforehand - you discover them along the way.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to be more flexible.
You don’t need to be more experienced.
You don’t need to be “better” at yoga.

You just need to arrive.

And from there, everything unfolds in its own time.
