What Is Reiki Healing?
If you’ve come across the term Reiki before, you might have wondered what it actually is - and what it feels like.
Is it a massage?
Is it meditation?
Is it something more spiritual?
In truth, Reiki is a gentle yet powerful practice that supports your wellbeing on a deeper level - helping you relax, rebalance, and reconnect.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that works with the body’s natural energy systems.
The word itself comes from two Japanese terms:
“Rei” meaning universal
“Ki” meaning life force energy
Together, Reiki translates to “universal life energy.”
The idea behind Reiki is simple: when your energy is flowing freely, you tend to feel balanced, calm, and well. When it becomes blocked or depleted - often through stress, overwhelm, or emotional strain - you may feel out of sync.
Reiki helps to gently restore that balance.
How Does Reiki Work?
During a Reiki session, the practitioner uses light touch or places their hands just above the body.
There’s no pressure or manipulation - just a calm, supportive presence.
The intention is to:
Encourage the flow of energy
Release blockages
Support the body’s natural ability to restore itself
It’s a deeply relaxing experience, often described as calming both the body and the mind at the same time.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Everyone’s experience is slightly different, but some common sensations include:
A feeling of warmth or gentle tingling
Deep relaxation
A sense of heaviness or lightness
Emotional release
Or simply a quiet stillness
Some people feel subtle shifts, while others notice a more profound sense of calm. There’s no right or wrong experience.
The Benefits of Reiki
Reiki isn’t about fixing or forcing anything - it’s about supporting your body and mind in a natural way.
Many people find it helps with:
Reducing stress and anxiety
Improving sleep
Easing tension in the body
Supporting emotional wellbeing
Creating a sense of balance and clarity
It’s particularly powerful when life feels busy, overwhelming, or emotionally heavy.
Reiki Within a Retreat Setting
Within my wellness retreats, Reiki is woven into the experience in a unique and supportive way through Reiki drumming meditations.
This combines energy healing with rhythmic sound, allowing you to drop even deeper into relaxation.
The steady beat of the drum can feel grounding and almost meditative - helping to:
Calm the nervous system
Release stored tension
Create a sense of inner stillness
You don’t need to understand how it works. You simply allow yourself to receive.
Is Reiki Right for You?
Reiki is suitable for everyone.
You don’t need any prior experience, beliefs, or understanding. It’s not about doing anything - it’s about allowing yourself to rest and be supported.
If you’re feeling:
Stressed or overwhelmed
Emotionally drained
Disconnected from yourself
In need of deep rest
Reiki can offer a gentle and nurturing space to reset.
A Moment to Pause
One of the most beautiful things about Reiki is how simple it is.
In a world that often asks you to do more, be more, and keep going - Reiki invites you to do the opposite.
To pause.
To soften.
To receive.

Final Thoughts
Reiki healing isn’t something you need to figure out or understand fully.
It’s something you experience.
And sometimes, simply giving yourself the space to slow down and receive that support can be more powerful than anything else.
