What to Expect From a Reiki Session
If you’ve never experienced Reiki before, you might be wondering what actually happens during a session - and what it might feel like. Reiki is a gentle and deeply relaxing energy healing practice, designed to restore balance, calm the mind, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Here’s what you can expect when you attend a Reiki session.
Arrival: Creating a Calm Space
When you arrive, the session usually begins with a short conversation with the practitioner. This is a chance to share any areas of concern, your current stress levels, or anything you’d like to focus on. The practitioner will also answer any questions you might have, helping you feel comfortable and prepared.
The environment is quiet and nurturing, often accompanied by soft lighting or soothing music. It’s designed to help you immediately begin to relax and let go of external distractions.
During the Session: Gentle Energy Healing
In a typical Reiki session, you will lie down fully clothed, either on a massage table or a comfortable mat. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different parts of your body.
The goal is to help energy flow freely throughout your body, supporting relaxation, balance, and overall wellbeing. There is no pressure, manipulation, or force - it’s entirely gentle.
Many people notice sensations such as:
Warmth or gentle tingling
A sense of heaviness or lightness
Deep relaxation
Emotional release
A calm, meditative stillness
Some people experience subtle effects, while others may feel more profound shifts. Both are perfectly normal.
Emotional and Mental Benefits
Reiki doesn’t just work on a physical level - it also helps to calm the mind and soothe emotions. During the session, it’s common to experience:
Reduced stress and anxiety
Greater clarity and focus
Emotional release of long-held tension
A sense of peace and inner calm
Even if nothing dramatic occurs, simply being still, present, and supported can be transformative.
After the Session: Integration and Reflection
Once the session ends, you’ll usually spend a few minutes sitting quietly. This allows your mind and body to integrate the healing energy. Some people feel energized, while others may feel sleepy or deeply relaxed.
It’s common to experience a sense of lightness, calm, or renewed balance in the hours and days following a Reiki session. Drinking water and giving yourself gentle rest afterward helps the body continue the process of restoration.
Reiki at a Retreat
Reiki sessions are particularly powerful when experienced in a retreat setting. At my wellness and yoga retreats, Reiki is woven into a holistic program that includes:
Yoga (Yin & Yang)
Meditation and yoga nidra
Reiki drumming meditations
Sound baths
Spiritual workshops
This combination creates an immersive space for deep relaxation, emotional release, and renewed energy.

A Reiki session is a gentle invitation to slow down, rest, and reconnect with yourself. You don’t need prior experience, flexibility, or understanding - just a willingness to receive the energy and allow yourself to relax.
Whether you’re seeking relief from stress, emotional clarity, or simply a moment of calm, Reiki offers a safe and nurturing space to restore balance and wellbeing.
